These teddy bear, shaggy animals are on the reovering list of animal Livestock Breeds Conservancy. Being conservators of rare breeds, we have added Scottish Highland Cattle to Lazy S Farms.
Originating in the rugged hills of Scotland, these hardy animals are known for their longevity, quality beef, easy calving and docile temperament.
We purchased them also to add a quality, good marbled, lean beef to our line of meat sales. We wanted a natural, grass fed, high quality carcass.
The British Royal family keeps a fold at their Balmoral Cast Estate and Scottish Highland are considered the beef animal of choice by the Queen.
A group of highland cattle are called a fold. They graze, browse, and eat plants most others avoid, their loving coats, which helps to keep them warm and dry in the winter months, shed in summer .
A cow will produce up to 20 years in age. Steers will finish out in 18 to 24 months and will weigh 1100 to 1200 pounds. The bulls throw small calves, which makes for easy birthing, with calves weighing 40 to 50 pounds at birth.
We are looking forward to our first calves in September and will put their pictures on the web site. The Scottish Highland cows join our Red Wattle and large black pigs and buckeye chickens who are on the critical list of ALBC.
